| Description: | ~500 kg rocks recovered. Approx 20% of dredge consist of very fresh, pl (2-5%) + ol (<2%) phyric pillow lavas with abundant fresh glassy margins, with very little alteration. The rest of the dredge (70%) are basalts without glass but still very fresh. They can be divided into two groups: 40% are dense with few vesicles < 5%; 30% are extremely vesicular containing 30-70% vesicles (both micro + macroscopic). The mineralogy of all the basalts is similar: the most abundant variety > 50% are pl (2-5%) + ol (0-2%) phyric, other types are plag (<2%) phyric, ol (< 2%) phyric, and Cpx + ol + pl (<2%) phyric. Plag + Cpx varieties are uncommon (< 10%). One piece of nearly aphyric pumice (andesite) was recovered. Less than 1 kg of silty foraminiferal sand and sandy silt extensively bored recovered. HIG: 6 bags undescribed, 1 bag smaller samples described, 1 bag with 3 large samples described. Sol Is: 5 bags undescribed, 1 bag small samples, described. 1-3 kg lava tube to B. Taylor. |
