Description:Labile sandstone: 1000 lbs. Calcareous, silty, fine labile sandstone; foram rich (10-50%). Poorly medium bedded, commonly bored and Mn encrusted. Some feldspar and chinopyroxene content. Mn crusts ca 1 mm thick. Bulk of samples (3 bags) to HIG. Samples 25-1 to 25-9 to Exon & Cook for sedimentological and palaeontological studies. Three bags to Solomons. Fauna: Abundant living deepwater corals, largely one Gorgonian species. Three pieces of pink coral include one of commercial grade. Abundant pink ophiroids in corals. Key coral samples to R. Grigg via HIG. Other biota to Ponder via Exon. Total recovery ~400 kg of moderately to highly indurated foram rich sands and weathered limestone. Many wereencrusted with living corals, brittle stars calcareous sponges and forams. Some almost completely encrusted with Mn- coating, sands contain 10-50% forams, with minor % of rock fragmens and mineral grains. Many samples are highly encrusted and extensively bored. The material was probably debris for the most part but some broken pieces suggest outcrops was also sampled. Possible Mid-Pliocene age-deposited on outer shelf or upper slope with no sign of contemporary volcanic activity. Several cubic feet of deepwater corraline material included: predominantly gorgonian types; some soft coral, black coral, several pieces of pink precious coral. 9 pieces described in detail - splits taken by Exon + Crook, ~3 bags for HIG, 2 Bag for Solomons.
