Description:Large group of dark grayish-brown, potato-sized, colloform or botryoidal manganese nodules associated with a few intermediate igneous rocks and many smaller manganese fragments. The number of nodules present is about 160. Many are nearly spherical others are flattened and slablike, while still others have been formed by the joining together of smaller globular nodules. The average size is close to 6 x 5.5 x 5 cm. The concentric layering on the nodules is obvious because some have partially exfoliated. The nuclei are either igneous rocks or pieces of indurated lutite that are commonly stained with oxide. Two of the igneous rocks examined have gray-colored groundmasses, one which is microcrystalline and the other cryptocrystalline. Both have inclusions of quartz. In one specimen the quartz is >10%, and there are in addition veins of silica glass. The rock is possibly a dacite. In the other specimen, cleavage faces of quartz can be seen under the microscope embedded in the cryptocrystalline groundmass. The rock may be either a dacite or quartz basalt. A third igneous rock examined has a dull brown microcrystalline groundmass. In it are quartz phenocrysts and abundant dark minerals-probably mostly pyroxenes. The rock may be a dacite. Most of the rocks are coated on their outside surfaces with iron oxide.
