Description: | This sample is a mixture of approximately 70% rock, 15% manganese nodules and 15% shark's teeth. The rock is angular, generally of low-medium sphericity, rust brown and manganese black. All the rocks are a deeply weathered clay, silt and probably sand mixture. Included in this limonite sedimentary are forams (some weathered out and some quite fresh), a vitreous (or resinous), yellowish mineral and distinctive spots where crystals or grains of a mineral have been completely altered by weathering leaving a porous lattice. The rock interior is a limonite orange color with black manganese along the fractures. Sizes range from sand to 33 x 22 x 20 mm., the average being slightly larger than pea size. Another rock form, instead of being blocky and angular is flat and thin. The mineral material is less granular, the color is yellowish rather than orange, and there are no forams definately established. The manganese nodules are not large, usually large pea size. Two of ten nodules are longer, approximately 30 mm. The nodules are gray-black and fractured. One has a visible rocky-clayey core. The shark teeth are, in nine cases of thirteen, associated with manganese nodules or incrustations. Included in the sample is a specimen that resembles dendritic native copper in form approximately 3 cm. long. It has a nobby shape, is brown-black on the surface and black, or limonite orange and calcareous white on the inside. One break disclosed a white core which gave a weak effervescence with dilute hydrochloric acid. This material is from the Brazil basin. |
